            \n\u201cAn unknown place\u201d: Scaleta<\/h2>\n

            Historical Background<\/strong>
            \nTwelve kilometers east of Rethymno and 65 km west of Heraklion, along the coastline of the Cretan Sea, lays historical and picturesque Scaleta or Skaleta. The area name is adopted from the Venetian word \u201cScala\u201d which was used for small ports not particularly organized. The two Byzantine churches of Zoodochos Pigi and St. Nicolas and the archeological finds imply that Scaleta has been inhabited since ancient times.<\/p>\n

            Natural Setting<\/strong>
            \nThe natural setting of Scaleta is equally impressive. The wide beach, unified with the open Sea, fades eventually into small hills which offer an outstanding view, especially at sunset. At its end the vast beach gives its place to a rocky shore, \u201ca beach without an end, ashore with thin white sand, on which you may walk all day and yet not find its end\u201d (Chronicle of a Town), a nostalgic depiction of Rethymno from 1898-1924, and the two trilogies, The Cretan (1948-1950) and The Sun of Death (1959) by the Cretan writer Pantelis Prevelakis.<\/p>\n

            Sea Caves-Visit<\/strong>
            \nA number of magnificent sea caves which you can visit by boat, comes after this rough and inaccessible shore. The most impressive \u201cLightcave\u201d was recently a shelter for the endangered Monk Seal Monachus-Monachus.
            \nThe Guardian Lion, the most amazing stalagmite in the cave, gives the impression to the visitor that it secures all these geological formations. By local folk these mysterious formations are named \u201cGate of the Nymph\u201d and \u201cNeptune\u2019s Ream\u201d<\/p>\n

            Sea Turtle Caretta-Caretta<\/strong>
            \nThe endangered sea turtle Caretta Caretta selects every year also Scaleta\u2019s beach sand to lay its eggs. Many spots are found every year and with mutual understanding we must help this rare species survive. Visit the nonprofit organization<\/p>\n
